Annalia Santiago (10) has enjoyed basketball since sixth grade. She has been in both the point and shooting guard position for just as long. This is Santiago’s second year playing JV basketball for Bloomingdale.

Santiago has always loved the team atmosphere and “[she] loves being able to play with [her] team and being able to work hard with them. It has changed the way [she] looks at friendship and what a team really is,” Santiago said.

When basketball practice is not in session, she does not want to fall out of shape or lose the skills from the previous season. “I work on my jump shot, three points, lay-ups, and dribbling,” Santiago said, to prepare for the upcoming regular season.

Santiago plays both point guard and shooting guard on the court, but it is not always easy. It is difficult “to get better than you already are,” Santiago said.

Looking toward the winter basketball season, “being able to get together with my team win more games,” she says, is most important to her. She also hopes to “become the best player [she] can be and be a leader and guide for the team,” Santiago said.

Preparing for games is very important to getting your mindset in the game, so you are ready to play and win. “I listen to music and get shots up before the game starts. Sometimes I also see how the other team might play,” she says.

Santiago’s advice to new players is to “push and work hard in everything you do even if it’s just running through plays in practice.. Don’t give up even if you feel like quitting. Always remember why you started.”

Playing basketball in college is a “huge deal” and she would like to, but says she doesn’t know if she will.
